Since 1997, Golden Sands RC&D has been partnering with County Land and Water Conservation Departments to bring groundwater education opportunities to 5th grade classrooms in Central Wisconsin. We are currently offering this program in Waupaca and Waushara Counties, but we're looking to expand our outreach to our entire Central Sands region.
The program teaches students about groundwater, soil types, and potential contaminates through a hands-on activity that simulates a soil profile. They learn how contaminates can penetrate soil layers, leach into the groundwater, and potentially end up in a community's drinking water supply.
This year we received grant funding from the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin. This funding has enabled us to offer two additional lessons to Waupaca and Waushara Counties. These lessons will build upon the original groundwater lesson, which will help to increase groundwater literacy.
The expanded groundwater program includes interactive lessons that teach students about how long items can last in a landfill and the importance of recycling and composting waste. They will learn how much water is on earth, where it comes from, and how much comes from each source.
