Festival Information |
Come and see an amazing sight. Greater Prairie-chickens on their traditional
display areas called booming grounds or leks. The males defend a small territory
during the April mating season by displays, postures, and combat with other males.
They court females by foot stomping, feather snapping, and "booming" - a sound which
can be heard for more than a mile.
See the Prairie Chickens on their booming grounds!
Booming grounds are the focal point for habitat management. Females will find suitable nesting locations within one mile of these sites. Further, females raise their chicks in brood habitat, often found nearby booming grounds. Booming ground surveys are conducted each April to learn more about how the population is doing from one year to the next.
