Demonstration Forests

Living Classrooms

Would you like to learn about sound forest management methods from a book? Or by going out to the woods to see it first hand? We think outdoor learning is best, too!

Established in 2006 with funding from a WI DNR Forest Stewardship grant, this project establishes a forestry stewardship demonstration site on a private woodland in all nine Golden Sands RC&D counties. The demo sites serve as "living classrooms" available to the public and schools. The grant, in conjunction with a gift from the John Kruger Family, funded the purchase and installation of nine mail boxes to hold site-specific brochures and nine large signs. Each sign bears a dedication plaque in memory of John Krugar and his outstanding leadership as Coordinator of Golden Sands RC&D from 1986-1997.
Cooperating landowners include:
Adams Co. - Nancy Livingston
Juneau Co. - Beverly Larson
Marathon Co. - Jim & Diane Mroczenski
Marquette Co. - Byron Hill
Monroe Co. - Lou George
Portage Co. - Dick, Marvin & Keith Olson
Waupaca Co. - Merlin Becker (pictured)
Waushara Co. - James Rivers
Wood Co. - Jim Joosten

In 2015, Merlin and Georgie Becker were selected as American Tree Farm's north central regional tree farmers of the year. Learn more about their farm and this recognition in this article.

**We are currently seeking sponsors for new sites in Outagamie, Green Lake, and Taylor Counties. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact us at 715-343-6215.
